What are Estate Sales?

12 Aug 2016

When you think of estate sales, what comes to mind? From my experience in explaining what I do for a living at parties and social gatherings, the general consensus is either having no idea what an estate sale is, or thinking it’s a bunch of old, dusty furniture and junk. I’m here to let you know that if you don’t know about estate sales, you’re missing out, and if you think it’s old dusty furniture and junk, well, this is far from the truth.

As the owner of one of the largest estate sale companies in Atlanta, Certified Estate Sales, I’m definitely a little biased. However, I promise you, estate sales are awesome! They are so much fun. You just never know what you’re going to find. Prior to owning a business, I frequently went to estate sales. As an avid customer of these sales, I benefited by being able to support myself by flipping items on eBay, and also by giving people some unbelievable gifts. From vintage, college memorabilia from your friends schools, to a personalized license plate with a good friend’s dog name on it (Tink), to a sterling silver baby rattle for a niece. The list goes on and on. I became an amazing gift giver without breaking the bank. You can find the coolest, most unique things around that you’ll never see anywhere else. Not to mention, it’s super exciting! The hunt, the haggling, it’s all just a blast. Full disclosure, not all estate sales are great. Even some of the ones we run. Every estate sale is different. Back when I used to attend them all weekend, I would sometimes spend 3 minutes at the sale, realizing instantly it was a bust.

If you’ve never been to an estate sale, I would highly recommend it. One of my goals as the owner of an estate sale business is to try to get into the consciousness of homeowners, especially new buyers and young couples who just purchased a new home. I want you to come to our sales. Don’t go to IKEA, please! Come check us out. You can get some absolutely amazing deals on some great pieces. The furniture that you can find at these sales are meant to last! They are high quality, unique pieces.

We have a huge following at our sales, and slowly but surely these customers put together some amazingly decorated houses. It’s all so unique and just so cool. I’m as guilty as anyone else when it comes to the ease of Amazon and online services. I’m addicted. It feels like a package shows up at my doorstep everyday. In order to offset my guilt, I recycle and I repurpose. There are tons of websites out there devoted to this movement and it’s becoming more and more popular. I’m not here to guilt trip you, but I promise, it feels good. It’s a good feeling to give something new life. Certified Estate Sales strives to keep as much as possible from ending up in a landfill. We do whatever we can to make sure these items find a good home, and what we can’t sell during the course of the sale, we donate to charity.

Our goal is to place items with a buyer who will appreciate it and can use it. We want to serve the end consumer. However, this is not always the case. We sell a lot to dealers, and entrepreneurs who buy and flip items from our sales. It’s shocking how much money some of these people can make. It’s a ton of work, but many of our customers claim to make 6 figures a year buying and selling on eBay. Seems shocking, but I believe it based off the volume that they purchase.

If you weren’t already interested in estate sales, I hope you are now. They are definitely worth giving a shot and may open a whole new world for you. If you already understand the beauty of an estate sale, then you should come check out some of ours.
